Take some warm sunshine, a historic, 19th-century fortress, add over 20 music stages and world-renowned performers, include a scenic view of the Danube river and you have a splendid recipe for a 4-day ‘music and fun’ experience! The location is the Petrovaradin fortress in Novi Sad, Serbia and the experience is the annual 4-day music extravaganza, Exit Festival.
From the 10th to the 13th of July, the Petrovaradin fortress is transformed into the idyllic location to host the annual (the fifteenth in a row) festival, winner of the “Best European Festival” award in 2013, where both performers and visitors come from the Balkan region and from all over the world to enjoy the eclectic music tastes on over 20 different stages in the warm and friendly city of Novi Sad in Serbia.
This festival, that started out in 1999 as a three month protest against the political regime at the time, has hosted a variety of big names in the music industry from artists the likes of Snoop Dogg, Robert Plant, Manu Chao, Carl Cox and Fatboy Slim to bands such as Faith No More, Wutang Clan, Die Antwoord, Suicidal Tendencies, House of Pain, The Prodigy, Guns n’ Roses and many more.
This year will be no exception to the rule of bringing a varied and entertaining lineup to Novi Sad this year either. The Main Stage will host Damon Albarn, Hurts, Suede, Skrillex, the Pet Shop Boys and the disco queen herself, Gloria Gaynor. The massively popular Dance Arena will keep the music going into the early hours of the morning with world-renown DJ’s such as Carl Cox, Afrojack, Disclosure and other local and international dance music heros.
The Fusion Stage (third largest stage at the festival) is another popular spot, featuring a concoction of great performers such as the Asian Dub Foundation, the Afghan Whigs, Che Sudaka and some of the local favourites to watch out for, Disciplin A Kitschme, Bombay Štampa and the Love Hunters. For lovers of metal and hard rock, the aptly named Explosive Stage will bring the heavy sounds of bands such as Madball, Sabaton, Arkona and 7 Seconds.
A plethora of other stages, each snugly situated in a mini-valley all over the fortress, will provide a wide selection of music to suit all festival-goers. The Latino stage, HNS stage, Reggae Stage and various chill-out zones are all as diverse and exciting as the next!
If camping is part of your festival experience, then the Exit camp* will be your ideal “home away from home” this year, as it has been every year so far. With all the necessary amenities (showers, toilets, foodland etc.), reliable security and helpful personnel the Exit Camp will provide you with everything you need to make your stay as enjoyable as possible. Come early, bring your tent and choose your spot! 🙂
*More info on the camp location, prices etc. will be on the official Exit website soon.
Novi Sad, as mentioned, is right on the banks of the Danube river and the Štrand and Oficirac beaches are sunny, warm and filled with food stands, pubs and cafes while offering shade and grass areas for relaxing and throwing a frisbee around once you’ve gotten your tan on the beach and taken a dip in the Danube. Basically, this means bring your towels, bathing suits and sunscreen along with your festival attire (many visitors come to the festival dressed in the weirdest costumes) so you can have fun in the sun during the day, before the festival gates open in the late afternoon.
Once the last festival day (Sunday the 13th) is over, pack your swimming cossie and make the trip down to Jaz beach near Budva in Montenegro for the second part of this “Exit Adventure”! From the 15th to the 17th of July, the party continues with Exit’s Sea Dance festival; a 3-day beach party on the beautiful Montenegro seaside featuring Jamiroquai, Underworld, Roger Sanchez, Bad Copy, Darkwood Dub and many more! This party spectacle on the beach, with a Main Stage, Dance Stage and Reggae Stage will definitely make this summer a fun-filled and memorable one.
So, with only days left until the Exit Adventure kicks off on the 10th of July, pack your bags, grab your tickets and your friends and make your way down/up to Novi Sad in Serbia (and then to Budva in Montenegro) for a summer you will never forget! 🙂
